June 2026. The South African Reserve Bank publishes its Cash Smart Strategy
The position paper puts the cost of cash to the South African economy at about R90 billion a year, finds retailer cash-back at the point of sale the most efficient cash-access channel, and names cash-to-digital bridge models, retail stores enabling cash deposits into mobile wallets, as the direction of travel.
